FAQs
What areas do you serve?
Our service areas include much of Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas North, East, and South of the city. Please view our service map for more details.
How do I book an appointment?
You can request an appointment by calling or texting the number or sending us an email. Please note that we do not have staff to answer the phone during all business hours, but please leave a voicemail and we will generally return your call same or next business day.
How long are the appointments?
Each appointment is unique in its length, and we are happy to take as long as necessary to fully help each patient. Our injection-only visits may take less than 15 minutes, while sick visits may take up to 1 hour or more.
What to expect for appointments
You will be given a 2 hour arrival window on your appointment day, and updated when we are on our way to you. We are happy to examine your pet in any reasonable location in your home that is best for you! For anxious kitties, it is best to have them in a small room such as a bathroom before we arrive to facilitate gentle restraint with minimal stress. In the event your pet is too stressed for us to proceed with the appointment, we will prescribe oral calming medications and schedule a recheck. Your pet's mental well-being and safety, as well as the safety of all people involved, are extremely important to us.
How long does it take for test results?
For in-house testing such as cytology, they are read same-day. For most routine lab work, you will receive results on the next business day.
What is the cancellation policy?
Due to appointment demand, if an appointment is cancelled less than 24 hours in advance, including an owner no-show, a cancellation fee of $75 will apply. This is subject to veterinarian discretion and may be waived in certain circumstances.
Do you offer discounts?
Yes, we offer a 10% discount to both senior citizens over 65 years old, as well as military.
When should I take my pet to an urgent care or emergency clinic?
If your pet is displaying any of the below symptoms, please seek more emergent care. For their safety, do NOT schedule a house-call appointment.
-
Cats who are panting/open-mouth breathing
-
Pale, white, or yellow gum color
-
Significant limping, including not putting any weight on the limb
-
Sudden inability to stand on hindlimbs
-
Male cat who is unable to produce urine or straining to urinate
-
Multiple episodes of vomiting within 24 hours
-
Severe, bloody diarrhea
-
Severe lethargy
-
No eating for >48 hours
Why do mobile veterinarians cost more?
Due to the nature of mobile medicine, costs will generally be higher than a brick-and-mortar clinic. The main reason for this is that the average caseload in a physical clinic is anywhere from 15-30 patients daily, while mobile veterinarians see on average 6-8 patients daily. Considerations include drive times, the requirement that each case must be fully complete before moving on to another pet (cases cannot be "juggled" while staff works on treatments), and the company's goal of providing relaxed, non-rushed care to each home.
What is our payment policy?
Payment is expected at the time of the appointment. We accept cash, card including most credit cards, Venmo, or Zelle. There is an option when booking an appointment to sign up for a payment plan for an additional fee.
ABOUT US
Tender Nubbin Care was founded by Dr. Rebecca Dunnett after she experienced how beneficial mobile veterinary practice can be to both clients and pets. Although she still works in urgent and emergency care, she decided to leave corporate-based medicine and develop a privately-owned practice to take veterinary medicine back to caring, high quality, personalized care. Dr. Dunnett is able to incorporate her love of cytology, surgery, dentistry, and companion animals of all shapes and sizes in order to provide an expanded mobile veterinary experience. Along with home care, we have partnered with a local clinic to utilize their surgery suite for our patient surgical needs, including spay/neuter, lump removals, cystotomies, dentals, and more.
Why mobile medicine? While brick-and-mortar clinics are excellent options and have expanded diagnostic capabilities for more urgent cases, house-call practices introduce numerous benefits. In addition to being in the comfort of their own home, pets also do not have the stress of a car ride - and therefore, less stress for owners too! Tender Nubbin Care also is proudly Fear Free Certified, which is an additional measure we take to make your pet as comfortable and relaxed as possible. A further benefit is us being able to see our patients in their normal environment (which is especially helpful with exotic species and their habitats), and often see any particular behaviors that are being displayed only at home.
We at Tender Nubbin Care are dedicated to providing the most up-to-date medicine and adapt to both are client and patients' needs. Owning a pet is a beautiful privilege and experience, and we aim to reduce the stress that comes with medical care so that you can focus on loving your furry, feathered, hairless, or scaled little nubbin.
